I believe that the main theme of the novel thus far is friendship, guilt, and redemption. I believe this because throughout the entire novel, Hosseini explains in detail the relationship between Amir and Hassan. He portrays Hassan as the brave one who is dedicated to make Amir's life as good as it could possibly be, while he portrays Amir as the spoiled, self-centered child who is much too concerned about what people will think if they discover that his best friend is a hazara boy. An example of this is when Hassan runs the kite for Amir and ends up being raped because he wouldn't give the kite up, while Amir knew what was happening and ran instead of helping Hassan. Guilt comes into play in chapter 17 where Rahim Khan tells Amir that Baba was really Hassan's father, and not Ali. I believe this is a showing of guilt because Rahim is telling Amir now because he knows he is dying and he wants to inform Amir of the things his father died without telling him. And redemption is seen in chapter 18, when Amir is considering going to Kabul to get Hassan's son, he is trying to rectify the wrongs he has done.
